Push vs. Pull Marketing

by Barbra Sundquist

Push marketing or “outbound marketing” is when you are pushing your business towards clients. Examples: cold calling, sales calls, chasing, writing proposals. Another term for push marketing is “interruption marketing”, because you are interrupting the potential customer without their permission.

Pull marketing or “inbound marketing” is when you make your business so inherently valuable that clients are pulled towards you. Examples: speaking, writing, relationship building, providing resources.

Pull marketing or inbound marketing focuses on getting found naturally by customers. You may also have heard this described as relationship marketing or permission marketing.
