Is Your Brand Consistent With Your Values?
I picked up a copy of Adbusters magazine yesterday, and opened it to a page that asked in big bold letters:
Before chosing a brand, more and more consumers are asking critical questions."What are the politics behind this brand? How does it promote the values that I believe in? What does this brand really stand for?"
The answer, more often than not, is "Nothing...this brand stands for nothing!"
That got me thinking about the HomeBusinessWiz brand. I wrote about my intentions for HomeBusinessWiz way back when I started this site. Here's a summary:
1) SimpleI love taking complicated information and making it simple. You'll find all the basics of starting and running a home-based business here, explained in clear, simple language. From the graphic design of the site to the content of the articles, simplicity is key to HomeBusinessWiz.
2) Practical
When I'm learning how to do something, I need it laid out step-by-step for me. So I try to do that for my readers as well.
3) Trustworthy
There's a lot of information about how to start and run a successful home-based business on the Internet. So much so that it can get confusing about whose advice to believe. I only recommend methods, techniques or products that I have actually used (or that someone I respect has used).
I know what my brand is - or at least what I intend it to be - but does my brand stand up to the critical scrutiny of my readers?
One area of ongoing concern is the advertising on HomeBusinessWiz. Although I'm careful to ensure anything I write is simple, practical and trustworthy... can I say the same for the Google ads and text link advertising (the little blue links in the top right corner)?
This is something that I do keep a close eye on. I check out most of the advertisers and if any of them seem questionable to me, I do a "block" in Google.
Because why take the care to build my brand as simple, practical and trustworthy, only to have it undermined by the advertising on my site? Not only would that not feel good on a values level, it just doesn't make good business sense.
