Logo Design: Make it Easy on Yourself

To get a logo designed for your home based business you have four main options:

Option #1: Hire a graphic designer

Pros: Fastest option. You can leave it to a professional, rather than fiddling around with it yourself. Your home business logo needs to look good, and if you are not a graphic designer you may not be able to do it justice. There's a lot to be said for leaving specialty tasks to specialists. You might be able to get your web designer to also design your logo, but be aware that graphic design and web design are two separate specialities and not everyone is good at both.

Cons: This is the most expensive option. The cost of having a logo designed by a graphic designer will vary depending on the designer’s rates (expect to pay $60 - $80 an hour), how clear you are about what you want, and how many revisions you ask for. Typically you are looking at about $300 - $500 and up to get a custom logo designed. That may sound like a lot of money for a start-up business, but your logo is a big part of your company image. Your investment in a well designed logo will pay off in the long run.

Option #2: Use the online LogoYes service

Pros: Fast. You can create a professional-quality home business logo online in minutes. No design experience or special software is required, and it only costs $99.

Cons: There aren't many cons with LogoYes. You may not get the same design quality you would hiring a professional designer. But the system is so well-designed that it's hard to go wrong.

Option #3: Do it yourself using AAALogo (an easy graphics program)

Pros: For $49 you download their very simple to use software, which allows you to make unlimited logos and business cards. In fact, I made the logo for HomeBusinessWiz (at the top of this page) myself using AAALogo. Depending on your "eye", you can get professional results for very little money. There is a trial download available so you can try it out at no cost. And for $49 it provides endless hours of creative fun!

Cons: There is no user manual or customer support, so if you have a question you are on your own. The trickiest part is when you have finished making the graphic, how to export it in the size and format that you need. I intend to make a tutorial for you on how to do that (soon!)

Option #4: Do it yourself using Adobe Photoshop Elements (a budget priced full feature graphics program).

Pros: Photoshop Elements is the junior version of Adobe Photoshop at a fraction of the price. Available as a download for $99 from Adobe. It is also readily available for purchase at places like Costco, Staples, Future Shop and Office Depot.

Cons: Be aware that learning a graphics program such as Photoshop Elements is not an easy task. If you have no prior graphic design experience, it can take weeks or even months to learn the program, resulting in frustration and wasted time.

Important to Know:

It’s important to understand that logos are graphics. Even if they are text only (like the HomeBusinessWiz logo), to look good a logo needs to be made in a graphics software. Word processing software such as Microsoft Word are not graphics software and you will not get the same quality of results.
